An algorithmic solution for networks

Mobile networks, regardless of the advanced features involved, rely greatly on the communication protocol between access routers and the mobile nodes. The inconsistencies between the these two elements present a great challenge in terms of Quality of Service (QoS), so finding a suitable solution is of paramount importance.
An algorithmic solution for networks
Establishing suitable solutions, especially ones accessible to most mobile communication networks, is perhaps one of the major goals of service providers seeking to enhance their QoS. To assist in this regard, an Italian university research group has proposed an intra-domain, distributive procedure capable of automatically mapping the surrounding wireless coverage.

A newly developed algorithm is also capable of self-updating the service capabilities. It primarily provides support for the administrative domain for advanced wireless network. The research team has put together a demonstrator application consisting mainly of an access router and a mobile node. Available freeware tools, including a set of agents used to implement the mobile IP protocols, facilitate the entire process.

Discovery and access router access selection is implemented through C programming language and allows entities to exchange messages through the User Datagram Protocol sockets over the network. The exchange of information with the mobile node however, is established through Wi-Fi Cards. Once detected, these service capabilities are uploaded into the relevant repository and for this purpose Java Agent Development Framework (JADE) is used.

At the user side, functionality is dependant upon a series of steps carried out at the transmission level mainly through accessing the Wi-Fi firmware cards. These steps include beacon scans and power measurements through the active channel.

The demonstrator has provided agreeable results, with the low signalling overhead associated with the proposed solution. Additionally, the hand-over success probability and the convergence time of the discovery mechanism have proven to be one of the main advantages.

The developers are seeking joint venture or technical cooperation agreements.
