A newly developed Italian technology has the potential to bring virtually any machine within a limited range into a personal or home information processing network.

The personal/home gateway is a middleware approach involving both hardware and software that enables data to flow between different networks. The device is based on an open and easy to customise framework that would allow users to exploit service applications in small/home overlay network environments.

With the aid of this system, the user will be able to manage and control various services within a distributed personal/home network of vertical user devices. These can be telecommunication, data access, as well, as device/appliances management and control services. The gateway features cost-effectiveness and user-friendliness without demanding IT specialisation.

Most importantly, it involves an interesting example of user-centred networking. Following the personal-network computing approach, any predefined statical configuration of the network environment is no longer required. By continuous collection of the user's functional needs, it provides dynamic allocations of network connections between the devices.

This versatile component can be integrated into intelligent context-aware personal/home automation or data access and telecommunications service applications. Thereby, users will be able to fully exploit IT technologies in their routine activities in the easiest way without any complexity involved. The gateway has already been experimentally tested and is available for further development and/or industrialisation/commercial exploitation.
