Shedding light on dental devices

The use of expanders in dentistry is common practice. A new intra-oral illuminating expander provides an ingenious alternative to a commonly used device.
Shedding light on dental devices
Expanders are essentially used to enable dentists to carry out their tasks within the oral cavity and difficult as manoeuvring might be, the situation is worsened by the lack of light during these operations. An Italian SME has combined an expander and an illuminator in the same device adding ample light to the operating area.

The device includes a high-power LED and a patented light guide. The expander can be dismantled and its parts can be sterilised as dictated by the rules of safety and hygiene. This innovation provides a practical solution to the problem of inadequate lighting faced by many practitioners in the field of dentistry.

The device is battery operated and easy to assemble and according to the inventors could offer significant profit margins based on market analysis estimations. The SME that developed this new illuminating expander is keen to out-license rights to it to dentistry and/or medical device companies.
