Spreading the word on air transport

A new initiative under the EU's aerospace programme represents a major change in the way in which air traffic services are provided. Innovative research helped bring about collaborative decision-making both in the air and at airports to improve air transport services.
Spreading the word on air transport
The CAATS project helped in the management and dissemination of knowledge concerning air traffic management (ATM) produced under the EU's Sixth Framework Programme. The information produced came under the three domains of safety, human factors and validation. The findings were used to produce best practice manuals that could be used by partners from EU-funded projects and other stakeholders.

The safety domain included a review of objectives, regulations, and assessment methodologies and covered all areas of flight and airport movements and new air traffic operations. The human factor domain focused mainly on the relationship between humans and machines and the acceptance of new technology by stakeholders. The work of the third domain focused on the validation of air traffic management systems.

The work of the CAATS project enabled a coordinated, cooperative approach to be taken towards European ATM research and technical support. The project also helped identify issues not yet covered thereby preventing the duplication of research, which is costly both in terms of money and resources. By ensuring the most effective application of research, Europe's aviation sector will become more sustainable and competitive.
