Funded under: FP6-NMP
Country: Bulgaria

Boosting resources for technological advancement

An EU-funded project succeeded in enhancing the research and technological capacity of an applied physics research centre. New equipment and enhanced EU collaboration now support regional and national initiatives in work on nanostructured coatings.
Boosting resources for technological advancement
Superhard coatings based on nanostructured films are used in a wide range of advanced industrial applications. To build on positive results to date, it is important to enhance understanding of the growth mechanisms and properties of nanostructured films.

The 'Strengthening the research and technological capacity in the field of nanostructured thin films, hard and superhard coatings' (RTCNanohard) project aimed to help scientists at Bulgaria's Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) consolidate knowledge on nanostructured thin films, hard and superhard coatings. Efforts in this direction were advanced by taking steps to improve the facility's related technological capacity.

Project partners thus set out to build on IAP's experience with thin films for semiconductor devices and recent progress in the development of hard coatings for cutting tools. To further technology-related research, RTCNanohard aimed to promote close collaboration with leading research groups in that area through mutual exchange visits, lectures and participation at international workshops.

At the same time, renewing existing equipment was central to improving technological capacity in accordance with modern standards. This enabled scientists to focus work on delivering reproducible results and technology ready for industrial applications.

Project outcomes have the potential to boost relations with the European science community and make an impact at regional and national levels.
