Bridging physical distances for better collaboration

An EU-funded team developed a web-based platform to provide the benefits of physical networking for small businesses. Enhancing communication among different players will prove a major advantage for across-the-board collaborations.
Bridging physical distances for better collaboration
Although larger organisations and those in academia often benefit from physical networking activities, it is quite a different story for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The latter do not have the appropriate resources to hand and have to stay focused on operational aspects. This situation translates to many missed collaboration opportunities for both sides.

The 'Speeding collaborations in the life science and health domain of the European research area and beyond' (Spidera for life) project developed a networking platform to address this issue. The online tool removes barriers to communication and enables individuals and organisations to rapidly build relationships with a view to collaboration.

The project deliverable is strengthened by powerful social network analysis capabilities and aims to accelerate research, assist the dissemination of information and enhance the competitiveness of EU health-related industries and businesses. As such, a key project objective was providing the means for improving the health of European citizens and addressing pressing global health issues.

Project partners approached the web-based networking concept with the vision of making the platform a key resource for life science and health players across Europe. It is also promoted as a preferred choice for establishing collaborative partnerships and giving a boost to technology-transfer start-ups.

Individuals are at the centre of the Spidera for life concept, where user-friendly software tools accessible from any location at any time offer them similar benefits to attendance at physical events.

Project outcomes promise to accelerate collaborations between SMEs and academia, and thus enhance the benefits of synergistic activities for all concerned.
