EU research permeates the Mediterranean basin

The Near East and North Africa benefit tremendously from European research. Mutually beneficial research cooperation has now been established.
EU research permeates the Mediterranean basin
As part of the EU's mission to support the economy and stability of its neighbours, the EU project 'Strengthening the European Research Area in Mediterranean Countries' (ERA-MED) improved target countries' participation in EU programmes.

The project encouraged Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian territories, Syria and Tunisia to exploit the EU's existing network of National Contact Points (NCPs) in order to join EU projects. It mapped the research and development priorities in the various Mediterranean countries and created an online database with organisations and key players to enrich the NCPs.

In addition, the project evaluated scientific support offered in these countries to identify strengths and weaknesses. This was done to reinforce the NCPs and strengthen the Mediterranean countries' role in the European Research Area (ERA).

The results of the project were disseminated through a project handbook, the project's website and the NPCs' websites which were updated as necessary. Valuable data and exchanges were also communicated through a report on scientific support in target countries, training workshops, training materials, project leaflets and dedicated events. These and other activities helped bring the level of Mediterranean NCPs closer to the level of their EU counterparts. They also enabled researchers in target countries to access EU projects, fostering valuable research and development links among the different regions.
