Sustaining Europe's cultural heritage

Forward-thinking policies to help preserve Europe's cultural heritage can help certain sectors of the economy and solidify our European identity.
Sustaining Europe's cultural heritage
Maintaining the rich cultural heritage of Europe within an EU context requires innovative policymaking and sustainable solutions. The EU-funded project 'Sustaining Europe's cultural heritage: from research to policy' (Sustaining Heritage) outlined how scientific research has led strong policymaking and best practices related to cultural heritage. It focused on different areas such as sustainability and the links between cultural heritage and society, as well as research dissemination and policies related to cultural heritage.

The project represented a platform for disseminating recent findings on the topic to policymakers, researchers, managers and conservation experts, revealing how sustainability principles can help protect cultural heritage. It increased understanding of traditional materials, new techniques and relevant skills through scientific research, promoting a sound balance among social, economic and environmental factors involved.

A dynamic project conference on sustaining cultural heritage brought policymakers and researchers together, investigating how research on the topic can lead to new policies and best practices. Several presentations on cultural heritage preservation, as well as a roundtable discussion on 'Investing in knowledge for sustainability of cultural heritage' helped the conference reach its objectives.

The results of the conference, including those from 57 workshop presentations that cover 31 EU-funded projects, were widely disseminated to stakeholders from 27 countries. At the end of the conference participants produced a declaration that aims to help preserve cultural heritage, increase collaboration in this important field and eventually strengthen Europe's historical identity.
