Closing the gaps in EU forestry

Continued expansion of the European Union means a correlated increase in the area of forestry and size of the wood sector. European research is helping the industry to face the resulting problems of a fragmented industry structure.
Closing the gaps in EU forestry
Enlargement of the EU has meant an increase in forest area of 25 % and a forestry-wood sector that now employs 4 million workers. The Innovawood SSA project aimed to use an integrated approach to bridge the resultant gaps among the many actors in the forestry-wood chain (FWC).

This initiative was targeted in particular at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) but also included industrial representatives, researchers, end users and public authorities. For a picture of the disparity between the industry's research capacity and its needs, the Innovawood SSA researchers conducted a survey and a gap analysis.

To achieve this ambitious objective, the team set up contact databases for the forestry industry researchers, some 450 individual contacts in more than 100 institutes. Databases for capabilities and needs were developed using online surveys in 27 EU countries and subsequent analysis resulted in an integrated strategy for innovations to bridge the information gap.

Organisations in the provider sector will be able to fashion their future strategy in line with the needs of the wood industry. Likewise, enterprises, particularly the smaller producers, can gain information on organisations with the expertise they need and form collaborations for the development of more competitive wood products.

A dissemination plan has further widened the net to bring in the maximum possible number of actors and stakeholders in Europe's forestry-wood sector. Reports for internal circulation, conferences and seminars, workshops and articles as well as publications will ensure that Innovawood SSA information will enable an increase in the sector's level of competitiveness while improving environmental protection.
