Chilean science connects with Europe

An online platform with a business database and articulation of cooperation opportunities in science and technology (S&T) will cement research and development ties between Chile and the EU.
Chilean science connects with Europe
Chile is one of South America's most prosperous nations and an emerging power, boasting a strong S&T sector supported by robust industry, impressive biodiversity and geographical uniqueness. The EU-funded project 'A Chilean-European platform to improve science and technology cooperation' (CHIEP) aimed to reinforce EU-Chilean collaboration in S&T. It sought to create an online platform that would enhance cooperation to the benefit of both the EU and Chile.

The project envisioned a sophisticated information portal on the Internet that would promote relevant publications and conferences in Chile. The information portal comprised detailed information about Chilean and European projects, listing opportunities and institutions for joint initiatives in the areas of S&T. This was followed by workshops on key specific topics and the prospect of exchange trips between Chilean and European scientists.

In addition, the project's second mandate was to increasingly involve Chilean stakeholders, i.e. members or institutions linked to the country's scientific and technological community, in the European Research Area (ERA). This initiative focused on facilitating mobility of researchers between Chile and Europe.

Efforts were also undertaken to strengthen collaboration with other Latin American countries, particularly Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, all of which had signed an S&T cooperation agreement with the EU. All these steps have fostered stronger ties between Chile and the EU, involving the three other Latin American partners as well, while advancing S&T collaboration for all involved.
