Nobel Laureates eager to inspire young researchers

Providing opportunities for meaningful scientific exchange and the advancement of research can boost the potential of brilliant young minds. In this vein, a European project was conceived to support the 60th meeting of Nobel Laureates.
Nobel Laureates eager to inspire young researchers
Every year since 1951, the Bavarian town of Lindau has hosted the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting – a gathering of Nobel Laureates and young academic researchers from across the natural science disciplines. The year 2010 marked the 60th such week-long gathering, serving to connect more than 50 Laureates and some 650 young researchers.

The '60th Nobel Laureate Meeting at Lindau - Interdiscinplinarity, Internationalisation, and Excellence' (LIN10) project was established with EU funding to support the international forum's goal to "Educate. Inspire. Connect". Activities helped maintain the tradition of stimulating dialogue on new discoveries, methodologies and issues, as well as encourage discussions broadening the depth of work undertaken by Nobel Laureates.

More than 100 scientific sessions were held. These included plenary lectures, discussion sessions, workshops, plenary panels, networking events and various social events. All offered ample opportunities for participants to inspire and be inspired, as well as to strengthen their research interests, establish new networks and initiate new collaborations.

Three sub-projects formed part of this grant, all helping to ensure the participation of young scientists and create a remarkable learning experience for all. The initiative also constituted an important contribution to the agenda of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and its scientific, societal, mobility and policy objectives.
