The main objective of this research proposal is to increase the use of product configurators, and thereby improve the competitiveness of European Industry. To meet this objective it is necessary to take away barriers to implement a product configurators (technical and organisational aspects) Research is required to:- definition of a framework for the applicability and limitations of product configurators in specific business environments - development of a general implementation method for product configurators, including aspects as: - rules for product design - translation of existing bills of material to a generic bill of material - educational programme to train people at several positions in the organisation structure in the use of a product configurators -development of improved specifications for product configurators The developed tools and methods will be in a pilot situation implemented at the SME's.
