TEMCO STRETCH, heat stable, biaxially oriented PET bags and devices for use in the medical sector. The project is proposed by a consortium of industrial companies, all of whom are involved in plastics and/or medical industries or in technologies supporting these manufacturing areas. Their common interest, which has led to this proposal, is to exploit and pursue opportunities to combine tools, manufacturing methods and products of both worlds. The subject of this project is alternatives to PVC and Latex materials in the medical sector. In short, the idea is to develop a process temperature controlled stretching which will facilitate that along range of items, today made by PVC, are substituted by products made by engineering plastics like polyethylenetereftalate PET. When biaxially oriented, PET crystallises and can be made heat stable in the area of up to 120°C which is needed to pack blood and some IV solutions and sterilise medical instrument. Welding of oriented PET material will be part of the new manufacturing process, and studies of laser welding in the Exploratory Phase looks promising. By controlled temperature during the stretching process, the new PET products can be manufactured with a wall thickness in the area of lO, lOO,. As a result hereof, a 40g PVC blood bag can be substituted by a 5g PET bag. When successfully developed and implemented, the new manufacturing process will lead to a quite new industrial exploitation of the environmentally friendly material PET. Thus, the project will have a large positive impact on the physical environment in two different ways: it will ensure conservation of natural resources and reduce the amount of industrial difficult to dispose of waste. - no migration of plasticizers like DEHP into blood in blood bags. Project results will be exploited by the partners as an expansion of their core businesses As they are ei ther involved in the plastics or medical industry or in technologies related to the proposed project, they have already identified a substantial market for the process as well as the products resulting from it.
