Description
Objective:
We aim to assess the impact of a secular decline in male endocrine functions on heath status and quality of life in elderly men, and identify the geographical, socio-economic, lifestyle and genetic determinants. Our main hypothesis is that regional variability in the health status/outcomes in ageing men can be explained by different rates of decline in anabolic hormones, which are in turn influenced by epigenetic and/or genetic factors. Self-administered questionnaires and portable population screening techniques are used to assess age-related changes in health status and potential predictor variables (hormone levels, bone density and body composition) in the community in a prospective study of the 4800 men aged 40-79 yr over a 5 draperied in 12 different regions of the EU. The results will
1) provide current unavailable age-specific incidence data on specific dysfunctions,
2) quantify regional differences in health status of ageing men which are related to hormone deficiency and
3) identified appropriate intention strategies and potential modifiable risk factors.
