Las ciencias de la Tierra aplicadas, como las geociencias, geofísica o hidrogeología, las actividades de explotación de la cantera y minería, y otras muchas áreas de las ciencias de la ingeniería y el medio ambiente necesitan una herramienta de exploración capaz de investigar la estructura de masas rocosas alrededor de los barrenos. El sistema de radar direccional es hoy día la técnica con más potencial, si bien tiene un uso limitado a profundidades de hasta 1.500 metros y arroja un elevado coste de funcionamiento. Pues bien, un consorcio de socios industriales ha impulsado una línea de investigación que se ha saldado con la creación de un sistema nuevo que salva las restricciones anteriores y ofrece un dilatado abanico de aplicaciones.

Radar systems for the exploration of earth-masses around bore-holes
Applied earth sciences, like geosciences, geophysics, hydrogeology; quarrying and mining companies and many other fields of engineering and the environmental sciences, need an exploration tool able to investigate the structure of rock masses around boreholes. The currently available directional borehole radar system is the most promising technique but is restricted to depths of up to 1500 meters and has a high cost of operation. Research performed by a consortium of industrial partners has developed a new system that dispenses with previous limitations and offers an expanded range of applications.

Les sciences appliquées de la terre, comme la géoscience, la géophysique, l'hydrogéologie, les entreprises exploitantes de carrières ou de mines, de nombreux autres domaines d'ingénierie et les sciences environnementales ont besoin d'un outil d'exploration pour étudier la structure des masses rocheuses autour des trous de forage. Le radar directionnel de sondage est actuellement la technique la plus prometteuse. Toutefois, son usage est limité à une profondeur maximale de 1500 mètres pour un coût d'exploitation élevé. Un groupe de partenaires industriels a développé au travers d'un programme de recherche un nouveau système exempt des restrictions précitées et doté d'un champ d'application plus vaste.

Le scienze della Terra applicate (geoscienze, geofisica, idrologia ecc.), accanto alle attività di estrazione mineraria e di cava, nonché molti altri settori dell'ingegneria e delle scienze ambientali, necessitano di strumenti di esplorazione in grado di analizzare la struttura delle masse rocciose attorno ai fori di perforazione. I sistemi radar direzionali attualmente disponibili per questo tipo di analisi stratigrafiche costituiscono la tecnica più promettente in questo campo. Il loro utilizzo, tuttavia, è limitato ad una profondità massima di 1.500 metri e comporta un costo di funzionamento elevato. Le ricerche condotte da un consorzio di partner industriali hanno permesso di sviluppare un nuovo sistema che supera le suddette limitazioni ed offre una gamma di applicazioni più vasta.
