Romanian researchers stay home to take part in EU programmes
EU-funded research projects in Romania are helping the country retain talent. Young researchers, who might be tempted to look for a career abroad, find they can contribute at an even higher level by staying at home and participating in exciting projects. They still get to travel, work with specialists in other European countries, and make important private sector contacts.

TOBI: Mind over matter for people with disabilities
People with serious physical disabilities are unable to do the everyday things that most of us take for granted despite having the will – and the brainpower – to do so. This is changing thanks to European projects such as TOBI (Tools for Brain-Computer Interaction). People with limited mobility can write emails and even regain control of paralysed limbs through thought alone.

Feature Stories - Search Gets Smarter with Identifiers
The future of computing is based on Big Data. The vast collections of information available on the web and in the cloud could help prevent the next financial crisis, or even tell you exactly when your bus is due. The key lies in giving everything – whether it's a person, business or product – a unique identifier.

ERC Story - Sound advice: modelling music halls
Have you ever seen an engineer conducting an imaginary orchestra? We think of scientists working in a lab, but Professor Tapio Lokki, of the Aalto University School of Science in Finland, has spent the last few years visiting concert halls and making meticulous measurements of their characteristics. 'Karaoke' is Japanese for 'empty orchestra' – and in some ways that is what he has created to help his studies. The research could lead to improved building designs and a form of audio 'Augmented Reality' (AR).

Feature Stories - A revolutionary portable lab for rapid and low-cost diagnosis
Do you remember James Bond film Casino Royale? After being poisoned, the agent uses a portable diagnostic kit to identify the toxic substance and alert his HQ in London. Such type of technology is not fiction anymore. European researchers have developed a ground-breaking diagnostic system based on smart cards and skin patches combined with a portable reader. Test results can directly be sent to a remote computer, a tablet or a smartphone through a wireless connection. This small lab can already detect cocaine consumption, monitor colon cancer, identify bacteria in food and analyse environmental contamination. Many other useful applications can be foreseen. Companies in Spain, Ireland and Denmark will soon commercialise this innovative diagnostic system.

RTD Success Stories - Taking the shock out of in-flight lightning strikes
Commercial passenger aircraft are struck by lightning on average once a year. Although the effects on aircraft and helicopters of low-amplitude lightning strikes are minimal, high-amplitude strikes can result in expensive delays and important repair and maintenance. An EU-funded project has developed a prototype in-flight system to measure the properties of actual lightning strikes and their possible effects on aircraft.
