Wishing to shape a brighter future for the European Union and its citizens, the Prime Ministers of the EU Member States decided almost eight years ago in Lisbon that Europe should become the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world by the year 2010. One of the central pillars to achieve this truly ambitious goal is the instrument of the European Research Area (ERA), the vision of an internal market for researchers.

Many efforts have been made and some satisfying results can already be seen. But still a lot needs to be done. The launch of the Green Paper on ERA by the European Commission in April last year has definitely brought a new momentum to the Lisbon Strategy.

Having realized the enormous potential of women in the world of science and research, the Slovenian Presidency will bring a new impetus to the issue by introducing examples of best practice of “ family-friendly scientific careers”. An integrated model based on a policy mix addressing the whole life cycle of the scientific career from the beginning through all stages up to the highest decision-making positions is needed. Complementary actions on national and EU level targeting these questions should help to improve the situation of researchers, in particular of young researchers and women. This should be reflected in a growing number of researchers which is of key importance for the full realization of ERA
