In order to deal with safety aspects adequately, a CHAUFFEUR Safety task Force was created. This group included experts for all
relevant parts of CHAUFFEUR's main function, Tow-Bar, and also the open operating environment. This Task Force first defined the proper function of the Tow-Bar. Starting from this, the possible mis-behaviour and/or failures were derived. The resulting Fault Tree provided insight into the criticality of systems, sub-systems and components, so the potentially needed improvements could be defined. The consideration of the open environment indicated the complexity of the operating situations. In order to handle this, a new methodology was created based on the FMEA (failure modes and effects analysis) form sheet.
