| Abstract One of the best studied models of nervous system function, the crustacean stomatogastric system, contains four motor networks, two of which are comprised of thirty identified neurones located in the stomatogastric ganglion. These two networks or central pattern generators remain spontaneously active in vitro where they have been found capable of a wide range of patterned motor output. Preliminary data derived from HCM-Project ERBCHICT930509 has suggested that only a part of this flexibility seen in vitro is expressed by the same networks in the intact animal. The new project here aims to examine further the range of operational plasticity of these central pattern generators in vivo, as well as to assess their functional interactions. By using electromyographic techniques developed in the laboratory, in conjunction with surgical and pharmacological manipulations, we will try to establish the full behavioural repertoire of these networks in long-term monitored, freely behaving animals, and their responses to experimental perturbation.
