| Abstract In the frame of the COASTIOOC (l) project which is currently being initiated by a number of European research institutions, I intend to study the potential of chlorophyll fluorescence measurements for the retrieval of the oceanic constituents in Mediterranean coastal waters from spaceborne measurements. My work will follow three steps. First, I will validate the fluorescence scheme of an existing radiative transfer model. For this purpose, I will use measurements performed at the host institution (LPCM, Villefranche-sur-Mer, France) by A. Morel and his group. The validated model will then be used to generate a synthetic data set of in-water, water leaving and top-of-atmosphere radiance spectra for the range of oceanic and atmospheric states encountered in the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. This data set will finally be used to investigate the potential of chlorophyll fluorescence measurements for the retrieval of phytoplankton in the presence of other optically active oceanic constituents (mineralic particles, dissolved organic matter, detritus) using simulated neural networks for the inverse modelling.
