The main objectives of the research will be the study of the electronic properties of uranium intermetallic I compounds in order to investigate the cross-over regime between localised and itinerant electron behaviour. A special attention will be given to strongly correlated electron systems and the study of such phenomena as magnetic instabilities, Kondo effect, RKKY interactions, unconventional superconductivity and non-Fermi-Liquid effects. The project will be primarily concentrated on the U2T2X system, where some first single-cryst experiments were already made in Lisbon and at the Institute for Transuranium Elements, but a detailed study of the magnetic and transport properties has to be made using high resolution techniques, for both weak and strong magnetic fields, over a wide range of temperatures (including dilution refrigerator temperatures), which are available at the Van der Waals - Zeeman Institute (WZI). The programme will be extended to other uranium intermetallics, especially heavy-fermis superconductors, like U6Co, URu2Si2, UPt3, UNi2AI3 and UPd2AI3. In a first phase an attempt to prepare high-quality superconducting U6Co, UNi2AI3 and UPd2AI3 single crystals will be made using the new crystal growth techniques developed at the WZI. Research efforts are on unconventional superconductivity, the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconducting state and the relation between heavy-fermion magnetism and superconductivity. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The main objectives of the training are the preparation of high-quality single-crystalline uranium intermetallics, the learning about the model parameters for hybridization in uranium intermetallics, the learning about unconventional superconductivity in uranium intermetallics and the acquaintance with the several experimental techniques available. The project will be completed by writing a doctors thesis in order to pass the Ph.D. examination to obtain the Doctors Degree in Physics of the University of Amsterdam.
