Abstract
Research objectives and content Recent investigations have indicated that the intermediate and deep water formation in the Barents Sea is important for polar climate. This process of dense water formation and its connection to regional climate in the Barents Sea will be examined by the combined analysis of oceanographic, meteorological and ice cover data of 17 years. With implication of meteorological forcing fields hydrographic data will be transformed to half- yearly fields by objective analysis, and from satellite radiance data ice concentration grids will be produced by Kalman Filtering. A statistical analysis of the fields of hydrographic, ice cover and heat exchange data will be performed with the goal to quantify the dense water formation with its strength and density range in the Barents Sea in relation to climatic variability. A box model consisting of different production areas and models will be used in combination with inverse method calculations to investigate the transformation of Atlantic Water and its flow from the Barents Sea into the Arctic Ocean.
