Objectives of research
Main objectives:
The aim of VIRGIL is to improve the access to transport and services in rural areas by (1) identifying and analysing good practices and experiences of rural access to transport of people and goods, (2) disseminating the results and (3) identifying needs for further research after a broad consultation of stakeholders.
A database will be developed with a simple to use query system. Special emphasis will be put on integrated transport solutions and the use of telematics. A number of case studies will be selected and these will be assessed on costs and operational effectiveness as well as on their role in promoting and sustaining local development. A broad consultation with round tables will take place involving different stakeholders, including rural development agencies, transport operators and other providers of transport and telematics services. Future research needs will be identified.
The results of the project will be disseminated through the publication of a handbook of good practices, a project website, the database of good practices and experiences that will be made available to a broad audience through ELTIS, and an international seminar to validate the project results and round tables at local/regional/national level.

There are direct links with the Commission Communication 'Developing the Citizen's Network'. At project level, the project is linked with the SAMPO and SCRIPT projects (DG XIII). A cooperation will be established with the ERANTIS project funded by DG XVII. The project results will feed into the Commission sponsored ELTIS information service.
