Road RESEARCH: AMADEUS

Project Acronym: AMADEUS
Type of contract: Shared Cost
Project title: Advanced Models for Analytical Design of European pavement Structures
Main contractor: BELGIAN ROAD RESEARCH CENTRE
Type organisation: Research Organisation
Country: BE
Start date & duration: 1998-01-01 - 18 months
Area: Road
Relevant tasks: 7.4.24
Total cost in kECUs: 1217
Total EU contribution in kECUs: 661

Objectives of research

Main objectives:

First main goal of AMADEUS is the evaluation of existing, advanced pavement design models by comparing their predictions using standard inputs. The ability of these models to deal with different materials, pavement construction, climate and traffic characteristics will be considered. The evaluation will lead to recommendations and guidelines to promote appropriate use of these design models. Second main goal is to set up the design elements for a comprehensive design method. In such a mechanistic design method a number of distress phenomena will be integrated. The measurable project objectives are: -Training of AMADEUS participants in the use of existing advanced pavement design methods. -Evaluation of these methods in a variety of well-defined traffic, materials and climatic conditions. -Workshop and subsequent evaluation activities in working groups for the individual models. -User guidelines on the limitations and range of the existing advanced pavement design models. -Detailed project plan for the development of a comprehensive pavement design methodology, integrating a number of deterioration phenomena.

The Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL) has started a Strategic European Road Research Programme (SERRP). One of the topics in SERRP is the development of an advanced, mature design methodology, based on fundamental understanding of the physical processes. Preliminary activities are dealt with in COST 333: Development of new Bitumunous Pavement Design Method". AMADEUS is the continuation of COST 333. Other related projects are COST 323 (Weigh in Motion of Road Vehicles), COST 324 (Long-Term Performance of Pavements), and 4FP projects WAVE and PARIS.
