Objectives of research

Main objectives:

• Identify the main factors of success or failure of current and past urban waterborne transport (UWT) services . • Estimate the volume of concerned passengers and goods either appearing combined or separately, in various conditions of sites. • Analyse the requirements for a full integration of a new waterborne transport concept into the intermodal transport chain. • Define the most attractive and competitive services to develop. • Design and test of a series of services for improvement of the role of UWT (case studies). • Assess the technical feasibility of an efficient, safe and environmentally friendly transport system. • Assess the needs of investments and how to improve the productivity of waterborne transportation services. • Assess the general profitability of the system. • Estimate the number of ships and infrastructure to be built upon economical hypothesis. CATRIV will investigate new promising vessel concepts paying attention to different criteria (technical, economical and environmental), and appropriate scenarios to cope with market needs which will be carefully identified and evaluated for European areas. The new system will be integrated in the existing public transport systems as an ecological alternative.

Demo Sites:

The case studies will be carried out in Venice, Lisbon and Amsterdam.
