Objectives of research
Main objectives:
To appraise on Formal and Scientific basis the navigation risk factors and level of safety of fast vessel operations due to: - The increase in speed by a factor of the order of 2, which reduces the response time of shipmasters when faced with a given event/situation and creates for fast and conventional ships unexpected or unidentifiable situations; - The vulnerability of fast vessels when faced with floating objects (containers, tree trunks, etc.); - Their vulnerability with regard to severe sea conditions and limited visibility; - The lack of accuracy of sea conditions predictions within some sea areas and the possible conflicts that may result from incompatibilities between safety and efficiency of fast ship operations. To define safety requirements of fast vessel operations and concrete actions to reach them by the means of: - Performance criteria related to fast ship navigational equipment taking accont of the specific human factors involved; - Operational procedures enhancing the safety of manoeuvres at sea and in the approaches to ports; - Suitable operators training courses and tools. The project will finally provide the European maritime community, including the competent authorities, with an enhanced knowledge in a domain where Europe may expect to play a leading role.
