Objectives of research

Main objectives:

Making better use of the exisiting infrastructure is one of the major objectives of the Common Transport Policy. The main problem involved is the large amount of data that has to be treated within a short period of time. To improve this situation and to provide road network operators with an efficient tool, the HIPERTRANS project will develop an accurate, high-speed, and visually interactive simulator for a road transportation network within a high-performance computing (HPC) environment. The simulator will be capable of interfacing, in real time, with urban traffic control (UTC) systems. It will be able to forecast the behaviour of a road network. The simulator will enable industrial end-users associated with the project, including road transport network operators to assess the performance of a road network quickly under a variety of operational conditions and behavourial patterns. It will also provide a tool for road traffic control systems commissioning and operator training, and for the specification, analysis, design, commissioning and operation of urban transportation networks prior to the implementation of new networks and strategies, or the modification of existing ones. The simulator is expected to be used in evaluating strategies to reduce traffic congestion levels (and consequent air pollution problems).
