Objectives of research
Main objectives:
The increase of the power consumption of the rail traffic makes it necessary to find a system that allows to keep a sufficient voltage on the overhead line and also avoid the construction of costly new sub-stations. This system consists of an electronic booster compensating the voltage drop of the main power transformer of the railway sub-station. European railway companies, such as the SNCF, RT, SNCB, NS, ITALFERR for 25 kV 50 Hz and DB-AG for 15 Kv 16 2/3 Hz will, in a first phase, write their common specifications, the latter being adopted to the industrial way of well known companies such as ANSALDO, CEGELEC and SIEMENS. In a second phase, the state-of-the-art will be completed by work from the universities. At a third stage, to solve the problem, new structures with semi-conductors such as GTO, IGBT or other components will be studied as well as more classical structures of converters. Economic assessment, test books, environmental impacts will be made throughout the project to ensure a good viability and feasibility of this HVB project. The last stage will consist in writing the specifications of a type of HVB with a technology chosen by the technical steering committee. The latter, composed by the six main partners (railways, industries, universities) will validate the main decisions to be taken during the project and the deliverables to be presented to the DGVII. This project will be followed by a proposal to the Brite Euram Programme of DGXII in order to build prototype(s) recommended by the end of this HVB project.
