Objectives of research
Main objectives:
A better knowledge of the potential negative impacts, due to the expected growth of Inland Navigation. The identification and elaboration of concepts, tools, and methods to reduce these negative impacts. Provide scientific support to policy making with respect to environment friendly increased use of inland navigation.
Secondary objective:
To analyse the present capacity of inland waterways and the present technologies, concepts and methods used in inland navigation; To develop three scenarios for the future (growing) use inland waterways; To analyse the socio-economic and environmental consequences of these scenarios; To provide concepts and criteria for the identification and assessments of negative impacts due to inland navigation; To identify and provide appropriate tools to reduce those impacts.
