Objectives of research

Main objectives:

To demonstrate VTMIS for Inland Navigation which involves the definition of RIS (River Information Services)

Secondary objective:

- To harmonise communications on European inland waterways and to provide a methodology and guidelines for the development of these communications in order to achieve this harmonisation across Europe; - To harmonise the reporting procedures in European inland waterways and to show the benefits of harmonised reporting procedures; - To demonstrate the provision of shore based or shore made traffic images on board of inland vessels to support the navigation (tactical) decision making on board in VTS covered and non VTS covered areas; - To demonstrate the use of a strategical traffic image supported by databases using ship based electronic reporting procedures, for resource management (terminals, bridges and locks) by providing ETAs, for dangerous goods information retrieval when inland vessels are involved and to provide a strategic overview of the traffic flows in the inland waterway network; - To demonstrate the usefulness of fairway information systems to support the user in planning his voyages and to provide him with relevant fairway information. Such Fairway information systems will differentiate between fast time dependent and slow varying information; - To demonstrate the importance of the application of ECDIS technology as the INGIS (Inland Navigation Geographical Information System) platform on which all safety systems are being built. - To provide a demonstration platform where other applications can be shown to the relevant authorities, but also the users who need to accept any future IT system.

Danube, between Krems and Peussenberg Rhine, between Rotterdam and Oberwesel and between Rotterdam and Antwerp Seine, between Paris and Rouen.
