Objectives of research
Main objectives:
INTRA-SEAS is aiming at the assessment of possible solutions for Multimodal Management in Terminals and in related Transport Networks. It is based on the development of models and computer simulation tools able to support the assesssment of the cost-benefit and safety impact of Integrated Management of Multimodal Traffic in Container Terminals and in the linked Inland Transportation Networks. Many projects have already tackled the subject of new technical solutions aimed at the improvement of the overall transport process, leaving to further research to study the evaluation of economics and safety factors. Through the above case study the optimization of management tasks in multimodal transport and of the related system solutions within Ports, Terminals and Inland Transport Operators will be targeted. - The project intends to take account, in the analysis work, also of the effects of information handling strategies (e.g. EDI, updated ETA, cargo advance booking etc.) The following are the main activities to be addressed : - collection of data relevant to three EU Ports, analysis of the present state of the management - definition of a comprehensive set of criteria for an exhaustive qualitative and quantitative description of the Case Study to be assessed. - Design and development of simulation tools to support the assessment of different operational scenarii. - Elaboration, validation and application of such tools in the Case Study. - Generalization for the applicability of the results to other ports in Europe.
Demo Sites:
The assessment will be quantitative as regards the operational costs and qualitative as regards the impact on safety and risk. It will be done in an integrated Case Study involving 3 EU Ports and 3 typical types of goods along the relevant Transportation Networks.
