Objectives of research

Main objectives:

The construction of new roads and the maintenance and use by traffic of existing roads, raises important problems of environmental pollution both in the immediate vicinity of the road and in the potential dispersion of pollutants further afield. Of all the pollutant sources one of the least studied, and least well understood, is the non-gaseous pollution arising from precipitation onto the road surface. This precipitation has the potential to mobilise pollutants on the road surface and to disperse them to soil and water by a variety of mechanisms and along numerous pathways. Windspreading of pollutants, particularly PAH, is also an important transport mechanism about which little is known. Work on this subject has been ongoing in Europe for a number of years but in a fragmented way with the main objective being to solve problems in the individual countries. To provide the European Union with comprehensive, Europe-wide, advice on the problem it is necessary to coordinate the research to avoid duplication and direct efforts towards a unified series of mitigation measures. The principal objectives of this study are, therefore:- 1. To determine and understand the absolute and relative importance of potential highway pollutants compared with other pollutant sources such as those from agriculture for example; 2. To understand the dispersal mechanisms - both through run-off and windspreading - of these pollutants and the pathways by which they are released to soil and groundwater; 3. To understand the physical and chemical impacts on the environment - local and national; and 4. To develop practical measures which may be taken to control, or mitigate against this pollution.
