R&D in Valencia

The selection of a limited number of priority research areas is the result of a strategic reflection on the impact of these activites on the socio-economic fabric of the Valencian Region. As a result of this execercise, three main strands of strategic actions have been identified fulfilling specific criteria.
On the one hand, industrial sectors that benefit immediately and directly from the utilisation of investment in RDI as a strategic variable in reinforcing competition, both in emerging fields as well as in mature areas.
On the other hand, institutions or groups of researchers in the Valencian Region carrying out existing RDI experiencies that have led them to a prominent position, at national or international level.

The strategic lines of action are defined below in terms of these criteria:

1. Encouragement, promotion and support for new technologies

  • Information and communications technologies
  • Biomedical sciences and technologies
  • Sciences and technologies associated with genetics
  • Transport and logistics
  • Environment and water resources
  • Renewable energies

2. Reinforcement of business competitiveness through technological innovation

Productive sectors

The Comunitat Valenciana contains a number of industrial sub-sectors of a traditional character which have gradually been adapting their processes of design, manufacture and commercialisation to the new technologies with the support of the network of technology institutes. It is also important to promote research and technological innovation in the area of tourism and cultural leisure, an activity of great socio-economic importance in the Comunitat Valenciana

Agro-food industry

Traditionally the Comunitat Valenciana has been noted for possessing agricultural institutes for research and technological development of the highest international prestige, a competitive advantage that justifies strengthening this leadership and continuing to use RDI to support the export side of the agro-food sector and to favour crops of high added value.

3. Strengthening the competence of research and technological innovation departments, institutes and centres of recognised excellence

Encouragement of science and of development and technological innovation in consolidated groups of the Comunitat Valenciana

This area of priority action includes all types of research, basic or otherwise, whether or not oriented by any sector program, as well as all centres of development and technological innovation, but always provided that they meet the criteria of excellence usual in the scientific and technical community.

This strategic action not only aims to make good use of the high quality of the consolidated RDI groups, but also seeks to intensify their impact on the scientific and technological community, and their possible effect on other groups, emerging or consolidated, of demonstrating the public stance in favour of excellence and the use of criteria of maximum quality in RDI.
