R&D infrastructure in Zachodniopomorskie

Education and Research

22 institutions of higher and business education (including out-of-town branches, faculties and institutes as well as consultation units) provide higher education to 67 535 students, including 21 351 students at Master level (year 2011/2012).

The biggest academic institutions are the University of Szczecin and the Universities of Technology located in Szczecin and Koszalin.

The region has tens of institutions of scientific research and development most of them are universities. There are also a few branches of Polish Academy of Science institutes. There are also 4 university incubators in West Pomerania, whose tasks comprise verification and support for students’ innovative ideas by making use of the potential and contacts of the universities. There are 2 science parks situated in Western Pomerania (in Szczecin and Koszalin).

Most of the research work and services that could be the source of innovative solutions in the region, are carried out by the public academic institutions located in Szczecin (4 institutions) and in Koszalin (1 institution). The majority of the technological (56%) and research offers (40%) come from the sector of technical science.
For now, the level of economic innovation in the voivodship is quite low. In 2009, intramural expenditures an R&D in voivodships in sectors in accordance with Frascati Manual in 2009 are 13,2% in business enterprise sector and 4,2% in government and private non-profit sector (PNP) and 82,6% in higher education sector (HES).
