Are you aware of your adaptive potential?
Dr. Aine Gormley-Gallagher from Cranfield University, UK is one of the TRUST scientists who developed the tool, which is available to use for free on the TRUST website. Aine, why did you see the need to create a tool like the web based self-audit adaptive potential tool? Organisations in the water sector are facing increasingly complex and evolving challenges - from meeting stricter performance requirements, to dealing with global trends such as population growth, economic downturns and climate change. This dynamic context increasingly requires organisations to be more flexible and adaptive - to adjust themselves to suit changing circumstances. The TRUST self-audit adaptive potential tool for urban water stakeholders has been developed specifically to help water sector organisations understand and improve their capacity to be adaptive. By doing so, an organisation can learn more from their experiences and adjust management practices as a result of what is learned. What does the tool do? The tool guides users through a series of targeted questions, in which they are asked to assess particular practices within of their organisation. The purpose is to instigate thoughts about how their organisation operates and how practices might be improved. What happens after the assessment? Once the tool questions are completed, an overall assessment scores that reflects the adaptive capacity of the user’s team is provided. A suite of on-line resources is also given to the user. These are specifically tailored to help build on the strengths and reduce the weaknesses in their adaptive capacity. Whom is the tool made for? The tool is geared towards teams and individuals working in the following business units in water sector organisations worldwide: Strategic management, customer relations, research & development and/or operations. My utility is running successfully. Why should I find out my adaptive capacity? Conditions can change – whether it’s climatic, legislative, a new contaminant outbreak, management, customer perceptions and demands – so it is difficult to tell if you are ready to adapt to the unknown. This tool will help identify how your practices might be improved and will give you an indication of your adaptive capacity from which you can benchmark as you take actions to improve it.
