A successful experience in communicating food science in Paris
The French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) hosted a professisonal media training for food and nutrition researchers on the 27th – 28th May in Paris. MAITRE project arrived in Paris with the aim of improving the communication skills of food and nutrition researchers through interactive activities led by a senior journalist who was able to fully attract the participants’ attention. The 10 researchers trained at the Inserm experienced real lessons and practical sessions on how to improve their communication ability to convey the importance of their research to the general public, through the media. The seminar hold by professional journalists, received very positive feedback from the participating researchers. In particular, hands-on and practical sessions have been particulary appreciated since effective and concrete examples gave the opportunity to researchers to immediately test their communication abilities and improvements. The seminar was organised and promoted by the EU-funded project MAITRE aiming at giving food and nutrition research a higher profile in Europe, by providing professional media training for reseachers. The MAITRE project keeps on following the participants even after the seminar, giving them the possibility to access an online platform to build network and create a longstanding collaboration between researchers and science journalists in order to reduce the gap between science and media.
