Novel techniques for better landslide prevention, preparedness and response

Landslides can have a substantial impact on society. An EU initiative researched and developed innovative services and products to manage landslides and their potentially devastating outcomes.

The EU-funded LAMPRE (Landslide modelling and tools for vulnerability assessment preparedness and recovery management) project aimed to prevent such crises by creating and applying successful techniques for assessing landslide vulnerability, mitigating risk/heightening preparedness, and improving post-landslide recovery/response. Project partners integrated satellite data and technologies with ground data, information and technologies to improve landslide risk mitigation and preparedness efforts, and post-event landslide recovery and reconstruction activities in susceptible areas. To achieve this, they enhanced detection and mapping abilities for landslides, evaluated landslide vulnerability, modelled the movement of landslides and predicted their behaviour, and assessed the possible effects of triggered landslides on roads. These activities led to the creation of seven products and services, three of which are maps. The landslide inventory map (LIM) shows the location, spatial extent and type of landslide in a region. The event landslide inventory map (ELIM) indicates the location and extent of landslides caused by a particular natural trigger. The landslide susceptibility model and map (LSMM) predicts where landslides are expected to occur based on terrain conditions. Landslide statistics (LStats) are key to landslide hazard and vulnerability modelling, risk assessment, and landscape and erosion modelling. 3D surface deformation models estimate slope-scale 3D landslide displacements, while landslide-road impact models explore various potential scenarios for regional road network disruptions by different types of landslides. The final product contains teaching materials and educational resources (LEdu). All seven products and services were then tested in Europe and beyond at sites representing various physical geography and climatic settings. The demand for such products on end users was evaluated. The LAMPRE team found LSMM and LStats ready to be exploited and marketed. ELIM, LIM and LEdu are nearly ready. The two models are not mature products yet. Three strategies were delivered on how to commercialise the products. LAMPRE introduced a more refined and technologically advanced approach to landslide prevention, preparedness and response. Relevant stakeholders will be better positioned to manage expectations and mitigate risks or potential crises.
