The Science and Technology Agency (STA), an administrative organ of the Government of Japan, established the STA fellowship programme in 1988 in order to offer opportunities for promising young foreign researchers in the fields of science and technology to conduct research at Japan's national laboratories and public research corporations (excluding universities and university-affiliated institutes). The Commission has the opportunity to nominate a limited number of candidates to the STA fellowships. Qualifications are as follows: - Possession of a doctorate degree in a scientific or engineering field, or equivalent qualification; - Aged under 35, in principle; - Having sufficient language ability to be able to pursue research in Japan; - The applicant must be a researcher in a scientific or engineering field; - The applicant must be in sufficiently good health as to be able to actively pursue his research work. Applicants must obtain an official invitation letter from a host institute and only then should the application be submitted to the Commission. The length of tenure (from six months to two years) and the field of research must be agreed upon by the candidate and the host institute. Benefits granted to awardees include: A round-trip airline ticket plus a travel allowance within Japan; a living allowance of 270,000 yen per month; a family allowance of 50,000 yen per month; a single international relocation allowance of 200,000 yen; free accomodations, or a housing allowance of up to 100,000 yen per month; free Japanese language lessons. Selected candidates will normally be interviewed in Brussels in July 1992 for tenure beginning in the autumn of 1992. Nevertheless, in exceptional cases, ad hoc interviews can be organized up to the end of October 1992. The STA fellowship selection process will be made in parallel with the selection process for the EC S&T Fellowship Programme in Japan described in a separate announcement on this database.
