The proceedings of PATINNOVA'97, the fourth European Congress on Patents, held in Vienna in May 1997, have recently been published by the European Commission, DG XIII. This conference, organized by the European Commission within the framework of the INNOVATION programme, was aimed at bringing together patent professionals and the innovation community.

The publication contains the full text of all the presentations given at the congress under the three overall themes covered. The first dealt with patents as a source of information. The fact that patents form the largest source of technical information in the world was underlined at the congress.

The second theme looked at the commercial aspects of patents. This covered topics such as costs, licensing, joint ventures, the exploitation of academic research, counterfeiting and competition laws.

The third theme covered the use of patents as a means of protection. An overview of the European situation was provided and comparisons were drawn with the USA and Japan. Case studies were presented, providing valuable lessons as to the best routes to take to obtain optimum protection. The associated industrial property rights of trademarks and design were also examined.
