Creating synergy of satellite telecommunications, earth observation and navigation

The Space Application Institute of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has launched a call for ideas to exploit the synergies between the three main space applications, namely telecommunications, navigation and earth observation.

The Centre for Earth Observation (CEO) has recently initiated a new activity, Applications on the Synergy of Satellite Telecommunications, Earth Observation and Navigation (ASTRON). Synergy of earth observation with satellite communications enables more cost-effective information dissemination, while synergy of earth observation with satellite navigation leads to more accurate measurements.

The main aims of ASTRON are:

- Demonstrating the potential of satellite communications and navigation to the earth observation community;
- Introducing the needs of the earth observation community to European industry and operators, to help them better meet the needs of their customers.

Preliminary work, gathering information regarding potential earth observation and relevant applications, current and planned satellite communication systems and user costs, is currently being undertaken. This call for ideas seeks to supplement this information. Organizations working in earth observation, navigation or telecommunications, whether research, governmental or commercial, are invited to contribute their ideas. This may include possible steps to take to enhance synergy among space applications, potential earth observation applications or guidance in the problems that CEO ASTRON should tackle.
