Call for proposals for research projects in bioscience

The German Federal Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Technology has launched a call for proposals for young scientists who want to carry out basic research projects in the field of biosciences, in Germany. Up to 50 groups of young scientists, from Germany or abroad, selected on the basis of a competition, will receive grants for a period of five years. The aim of the initiative is provide new impulse for basic bioscience research and to enhance the career prospects of well-trained young scientists.

Preliminary applications, in the form of project outlines, may be submitted directly by either project leaders or groups of young PhD holders. After a preliminary selection, invitations will be made to successful applicants to submit full proposals in conjunction with the host German research institute. The host institute will become the formal grant recipient and will assist in the administration of the grant. They will also be required to make available the necessary facilities for the young scientists to implement their project.

Teams should work on topics in the frontiers of biology and neighbouring disciplines such as chemistry, physics or informatics. The proposals will be assessed on grounds of scientific originality, the applicant's qualifications and suitability for project leadership, and the expected contribution of the project to increasing knowledge in biotechnology.
