The European Commission, DG XII, has published the third edition of a catalogue of contracts which gives an up-to-date overview of EU joint research projects involving participants from the Mediterranean partner countries. The overall objective of these projects is to assist in the creation of a "Euro-Mediterranean scientific and technological area", and to contribute to the implementation of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership.

The projects covered in this publication have been funded under EU programmes such as the AVICENNE initiative for science and technology cooperation, the developing countries sub-programme of the current specific programme for cooperation with third countries and international organizations (INCO-DC), the International Scientific Cooperation initiative (ISC), and the Science and Technology for Development programme (STD), which included the Mediterranean region.

A total of 178 Euro-Mediterranean projects, from the period 1988 to 1996, are documented in this publication, which contains information on project objectives, activities, related publications, expected outcome, research results where possible, and contact details for project partners.

The projects are organized by topic, divided into:

- Natural resources;
- Agriculture;
- Health;
- Advanced technologies, including information and communications technologies, biotechnology and materials and production technologies.

The publication contains indexes of contracts by topic, participating scientists, and participating countries.
