The European Commission has adopted a proposal concerning the conclusion of an agreement between the EU and Cyprus which would open the EU's audiovisual programmes to participation by Cypriot entities. Such participation would be within the framework of the MEDIA II programmes (1996-2000), for the training of professionals in the European audiovisual programme industry, and for the development and distribution of European audiovisual works. The main issues addressed in the agreement, which would apply for the duration of the MEDIA II programme, are the following: - Cypriot entities may participate in all actions of MEDIA II under the same conditions as for EU Member States; - Cyprus will set up, or make available national structures and mechanisms in order to implement its participation; - Cyprus will cover its own costs of participation; - Cypriot authorities will be invited to coordination meetings, prior to MEDIA II Committee meetings and will have access to information on the outcome of these meetings; - Cyprus will be associated to the monitoring of the programme; - The EU and Cyprus will exchange information on legislative alignment in the audiovisual sector.
