A new CD-ROM containing over three million patent documents, is now available from the European Patent Office (EPO). The production of this CD-ROM, was jointly financed by the US Patent and Trademark Office, the EPO and the Japanese Patent Office and contains data covering practically all the patent literature in the world, excluding Japanese data which is published separately. The information contained on the CD-ROM is derived from the First Page Data Base (FPDB) which contains a single representative member of almost every patent family published by the EPO, France, UK, Switzerland, the United States, and the World Intellectual Property Office. Patent families result when a patent applicant submits an application for the same invention in several countries, resulting in several patents based on the same priority information. The documents contained in the CD-ROM are presented as bibliographic text, including title and abstract and, where appropriate, the image of a representative drawing.
