The Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, which is based in Karlsruhe, Germany, has recently been awarded ISO 9001 certification for quality management. The ITU is one of the first European nuclear research establishments to have obtained certification in line with ISO 9001. The quality management system designed, introduced and implemented by the ITU meets the specific goals, requirements and operating conditions of a research establishment for ISO 9001 accreditation. It covers contractual work in the following fields: - Chemical, physical and material science investigations of irradiated and non-irradiated nuclear fuels, radioactive waste, and nuclear materials accountancy samples; - Development and operation of laboratory equipment and measuring devices for nuclear installations; - Development and production of samples for irradiation experiments for nuclear safety research purposes. The reasons for the introduction of this quality management system included: - Compliance with customer's demands for high quality products and services; - Improving competitiveness; - Clarification of competences in-house and improving transparency; - Optimizing project management and reduction of safety risks.
