The first joint concertation meeting for projects supported by the Educational Multimedia Task Force and the Education and Training sector of the Telematics Applications programme, was held in Brussels, Belgium, on 17 and 18 June 1998. The event attracted representatives from over 100 projects, and aimed to provide a forum for researchers and users to come together to discuss various aspects of their projects.

The meeting was opened by Mr. Rodríguez-Rosello of the European Commission, DG XIII, who highlighted the importance of concerted efforts in supporting lifelong learning for all of Europe's citizens. He also emphasised the importance of the exploitation of project results and the production of working versions of such results.

Project managers were provided with the opportunity to learn more about new technological innovations, such as:

- Internet developments and future applications;
- Web developments and future applications;
- Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML);
- Demonstration of Global Educational Multimedia Server (GEM).

Two parallel sessions presented and discussed various projects and associated problems and solutions:

- Learning processes involved in scientific and technical development which covered projects including: POST-DOC: training doctors for Europe; COAST: multimedia tool for medical students; BREVIE: virtual reality in vocational training; ASTEP: advanced software for teaching the evaluation of processes;
- Dissemination, best practice and exploitation plans which covered projects such as AGORA, EETP and TELEMAN.
