The European Commission, DG XII, has published the results of the AGUAS project on palaeoclimatic reconstruction and the dynamics of human settlement and land-use in the middle Aguas (Almería), in the south-east of the Iberian peninsula. This project was funded under the EU's Environment and Climate research programme.

The project aimed to investigate the evolutionary dynamics of metastable systems and the impact of human activity as a crucial factor in the desertification and degradation of the Mediterranean region. A geographical information system (GIS) of the Vera basin and Almería was constructed during the project, in order to provide a framework within which environmental, archaeological and historical data could be combined. This allowed the improvement of long-term understanding and formed the basis for modelling human settlement and associated land-use changes.

The publication is divided into seven sections, which deal with the following:

- Introduction to the project's main aims and objectives;
- The methodologies employed and the main evidence;
- The general environmental features of the area under study: the middle and lower Aguas valley;
- Socio-natural interaction during the last 6,000 years in the Aguas valley;
- Project results and policy recommendations;
