Studies on aspects of EU telecommunications policy

The European Commission, DG XIII, has published invitations to tender for five separate studies on telecommunications related issues. Each study is aimed at analysing the current situation in the EU and, where appropriate, should provide suggestions for actions to improve the quality of telecommunications services within the liberalised EU market.

The following topics are to be the subject of studies, each of which should be completed within nine months:

- Submarine cable landing rights in Member States and existing practices for provision of transmission capacity on international routes, including terrestrial circuits, submarine cables and satellite links;
- The quality of voice telephony services and related consumer protection issues;
- Assessment of the situation of interconnection in telecommunications in the EU and the need to review the ONP Interconnection Directive 97/33/EC;
- Remaining barriers to an EU-wide telecommunications market after 1 January 1998;
- Study on consumer demand for telecommunications services and the implications of the convergence of fixed and mobile networks for the regulatory framework for a liberalised EU market.
