Commission looks for support for Nitrates Directive

The Nitrates Directive (91/676/EC) provides a legal regime to lessen risks of pollution in the EU from substances containing nitrates. The Commission has published an invitation to tender for a framework contract to provide services relating to the Nitrates Directive.

The contractor will be required to:

- Provide independent, impartial and punctual scientific, socio-economic and technical advice in the field of nitrate pollution, in particular from agricultural sources, especially on issues linked directly or indirectly to the Nitrates Directive or to fertilisers;
- Carry out studies required by the Commission concerning the scientific, technical and socio-economic issues related to the Nitrates Directive and other related subjects;
- Prepare briefings and position papers for meetings of international conventions where these concern nitrate pollution and in particular, eutrophication.

The framework contract would be concluded initially for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension for two further one-year periods.
