The test launch of the pilot phase of the European Research Gateways On-line (ERGO) project, started in 1997, has recently been made public. The project, financed under the Community's INNOVATION programme and currently run under the Community Research and Development Information Services (CORDIS) project, aims to provide a one-stop shop for European research and development project information.

The pilot phase now holds over 20,000 project records from seven information providers and aims to give access to a catalogue of R&D projects from some 20 to 30 European research information systems by mid-1999. It offers two types of search facilities, a free text search box or a more detailed catalogue search allowing users to refine their search.

The progress made in the pilot phase is monitored by the ERGO Implementation Group (EIG) composed of content providers from most EU Member States who are assisted by a central ERGO team. The content providers manage research project information databases in their own country and their role is to provide contents to the central team in a specified pre-defined format. The central team, who form part of the CORDIS project, manage the data collection and ensure proper insertion into the central catalogue and are interested in hearing from potential providers of national R&D project information.
